University environment and dimensions

The Postgraduate Program in Philology and Portuguese Language is characterized by its considerable dimensions:

502 researchers were active in the Program between 2017 and 2020 - professors, master's and doctoral students, undergraduate students in the scientific initiation stage and graduated researchers in the post-doctoral stage:

34 advisors;
46 postdoctoral students (13 completed their internships in the quadrennium);
132 doctoral students (68 graduated in the quadrennium);
126 masters students (55 having graduated in the quadrennium);
184 undergraduate students (84 completed their internships in the quadrennium).

These large dimensions are in harmony with the university environment of the Program, which is housed in the Department of Classical and Vernacular Letters, one of those responsible for the Letters Course at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences at the University of São Paulo.

With about 900 new students every year, this is the largest Language and Literature course in Brazil.

Among the 16 different qualifications offered to students, the qualification in Portuguese stands out, an option offered to all and absolutely widespread among undergraduate students. Thus, the subjects of the Portuguese Language grid, under the responsibility of the teachers of the Portuguese Language area of the DLCV, are taken by the virtual totality of students of Literature at the Faculty.

The Program's professors are strongly linked to work in the Portuguese language area in the undergraduate course of Letters. We currently have 34 professors; five of them are retired, and the remaining 28 are still working on graduation - the vast majority (25 of them), in the Portuguese language area.

The Program's close relationship with the undergraduate degree in Letters, in addition to being positively reflected in the orientation of research in the initiation stage, also translates into the fact that the majority of those entering the Master's Program (70%), originate from the University of São Paulo itself and, particularly, from the Literature course itself:

Origin of those entering the Program, 2017-2020 - master's degree:

  • 70.4% of the master's students came from the undergraduate course in Letters at USP;
  • 04.6% of the master's students came from other USP graduations;
  • 26.9% of the Master's students came from other Universities.

In the case of doctoral students, the scenario is different. A good portion of those entering the doctorate (42%) have sought the Program from other Universities in the State of São Paulo, other states in Brazil and other countries; there is also a less significant portion (7%) of new students coming from other programs of USP itself; and half of those entering the doctorate were masters trained in the Program itself:

Origin of those entering the Program, 2017-2020 - doctorate:

  • 50.4% of the doctoral students came from the master's degree in the Program;
  • 07.1% of the doctoral students came from other master's programs at USP;
  • 42.6% of the doctoral students came from other universities in Brazil or abroad.

It is important to highlight, particularly with regard to researchers who seek the Program from other states and countries, the importance of the university environment for the well-being of students. Headquartered at Cidade Universitária Armando Sales de Oliveira, the main campus of the University of São Paulo, the Program benefits from the significant (social and academic) support network maintained by the University on this campus.
